Undercut - Wood and Cast Aluminium furniture

“Undercut” is a concept furniture project using two materials, Mahogany wood and cast aluminium, bringing them together in a direct fashion using no conventional connector or additive.

The models for the objects are made of fine wood and with polystyrene foam for the legs and then smoothing the surface of the model using a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) cutting machine and manually finishing the legs in the workshop.  After the pieces of the model were assembled, the wood and foam elements were buried in a sand mould and molten aluminium was then poured through specific holes onto the model.

The hot metal dissolves the foam which and takes its place forming the solid legs of the object.
When feeding the molten aluminium through a mesh netting above and below surface of the wooden seat or table, the metal fills the area, connecting the wood which, in turn, becomes trapped by the metals elements.

“Undercut”  is the condition where one has a negative angle in a mould which then makes it difficult to release the model from the mould. Here we use a situation that we would normally try to avoid, in my favour.

In the design we present the language of organic forms and make place for imperfect and asymmetric features in our artistic perception.
